Back in 2010 Intel released the Pentium G6951, an interesting processor that for $50 could be upgraded through software that enabled Hyper Threading, as well as giving the user 1mb of extra cache. Available in a few markets this upgrade essentially gave the Pentium i3 performance, but the idea never really caught on.
