House of Ashes was developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment as the third out of eight planned standalone horror video games in The Dark Pictures Anthology.
The game is played with a cast of five protagonists in a multilinear narrative influenced by a player’s choice. The decision-making scenes within the game significantly alter the plot direction and can change the main character relationships, which can lead to any of the five protagonists dying permanently.
House of Ashes is set in 2003 Iraq and follows five protagonist armed forces characters (four Americans and one Iraqi) who, during a gun fight between the Americans and Iraqis, fall underground into an ancient temple. The five characters must find a way out of the ancient underground temple as well as decide to work together or not to fight off strange bat-like creatures that are hunting them.
House of Ashes was released for PlayStation 4 & 5, PC, Xbox One & Series X/S on October 22, 2021.
