The band was watching a horse race and the winning horse was named after Archduke Franz Ferdinand. They were struck by the odd choice and decided they liked the alliteration as well the connection to the assassination of the Archduke which was one of the most important single events of modern history leading as it did to the start of World War 1.
The music video for Franz Ferdinand’s “Take Me Out” was directed by Jonas Odell. It includes the band amid a Dadaist animation involving quirky vintage figures and machinery reminiscent of Terry Gilliam's cartoon segments for Monty Python. The avant-garde music video for "Take Me Out" earned them a Breakthrough Video MTV Award.
