the devices that demand our attention
In the past few weeks I've not only been surprised by my screen time, but also the extent to which my behavior is swayed by an almost constant need to check my phone. While I do ultimately consider myself responsible, it doesn't help that many of the social media platforms are fundamentally tailored to keep our social-interaction-craving-monkey-brains as hooked as possible.
With never-ending access and possibilities, boredom doesn't exist anymore - but simultaneously there's never an excuse not to be doing something. Is your essay on the history of shoelaces going to write itself? Didn't think so.
Obviously there's so much good that's come out of these technologies, and it's hard to imagine a world without them. But I just think it's time we should really start asking ourselves how we actually want to be using them, and where to direct our attention. Because if we don't decide those things for ourselves, someone or something else will.
Whoever you are reading this, I must say, lookin' pretty cute today ;)
