In this video I try to explain the difference between normal headbutt trees and special headbutt trees in Pokemon Gold and Silver. Appearently there are three different kinds of trees in two categories: normal encounter trees and low-encounter trees. How these work is that 90% of trees (which are based on your Trainer ID) will be normal headbutt trees and the remaining 10% will be special headbutt trees. This way when there is a 1/10 chance of finding a special tree, I suggest you to encounter 7-9 Pokemon from a tree before moving to the next one. If you look at Serebii.net you can see what Pokemon are found differently in the two kinds of categories of trees and so, as seen in this video: Metapod and Pineco cannot be found in the same tree and you can therefore move to the next tree if you are looking for a Pineco!
