While recording attempts at a 100 point run of Ragnarok Core I had a couple of fights against Tech Kraken that really stood out to me. This video is a combination of those fights and I think it perfectly demonstrates the sheer randomness present in the MMZ4 boss fights. Some of the bosses in Z4 suffer from having attack patterns that either force you to meticulously dodge and weave between projectiles or they simply allow you to slash them to bits as they put up minimal resistance. The challenge seems to be all or nothing in some cases with no real middle ground.

In the first fight here against Tech Kraken you’ll see that he combines his reflective lasers, ice mirror and wall crawling spears to create an engaging pattern which requires practice in order to consistently dodge while getting in some damaging hits with your weapons. In the second fight however he effectively does nothing, just swims around a couple of times while I slash him with the Faital Z-Knuckle weapon along with Flame Fang and Sky Chaser.

Of course the bosses in the other games had some patterns that were easier to avoid than others but I don’t recall anything this egregious. Aside from Weil’s second form there doesn’t seem to be any checks in Z4’s code that prevents bosses from executing the same attack multiple times in a row, it’s all completely random. Some other examples include Noble Mandrago burrowing into the ground, you’re free to slash to your heart’s content while she fruitlessly throws honey at you. However if she floods the screen with plants and turrets the fight can become a lot more challenging. Popla Cocapetri also suffers from this, he can either aimlessly jump around or launch a barrage of feathers, smoke bombs and eggs.

If you've had any interesting fights against the MMZ4 bosses feel free to let me know, I'm always interested in hearing about the experiences of other players and potentially learning something.
