The Expanse and Gravity. How gravity is portrayed in "The Expanse" #nature #science #technology
Hi, Thanks for watching!
In this video we discuss the portrayal of gravity in one of my favorite scif shows/novels, "The Expanse" by James SA Corey, airing on Amazon Prime. "The Expanse" has earned a reputation for it's scientific accuracy and effort put into following the laws of physics. Awesome visuals showing space flight, battle and combat (trailer footage featured). Highly recommend it, also great plot, world and characters. The show does a great job of showing life in zero gravity and falling down gravity wells.
Gravity is the most mysterious of the four fundamental forces. Bending space time around any massive object, distorting the very passage of time. The video covers/reviews a few basic(intro) scientific concepts about gravity, it's reaction to the universe, gravitational wave detection, and the two forms of artificial gravity in The Expanse and how it's defied:
Spin Gravity
Thrust Gravity
Einstein's theory of relativity equates gravity, with acceleration or a force. So there are two common ways that the accelerative force of gravity is replicated in space (creating a sort of artificial gravity), and that is simple forward acceleration, and taking advantage of the centrifugal force of spin to replicate gravity. At least as best as we know with current science, physics and technology.
Video compares some of the pro's and con's on each, along with some examples of how they are presented in the show and the books. The Nauvoo (Medina) station is a great example of how spin gravity would be used in space.
Minor spoilers for the first three seasons and books of the show, so be aware if you are avoiding spoilers. But anything we go over is pretty vague so as to not spoil anything.
Video includes a narration of different sections of the novels that show off how the books/shows portray gravity. Video clips are mostly drawn from Amazon Prime's The Expanse TV show (which I highly recommend)
Like and subscribe if you liked the video. If you have any questions about anything in the video, in terms of the science or engineering, please ask in the comments and I'll try to answer.
Take care and thank you, appreciate the views, likes and subscribes. It's been great fun making science and technology videos.
