The Police released their first album, "Outlandos d'Amour", in November 1978, marked by a musical style influenced by punk rock, new wave and reggae.

Between 1977 and 1978, before their first album release, Sting and Andy Summers collaborated with german experimental composer Eberhard Schoener; Stewart Copeland also joined for a time.

This collab resulted in two albums ("Flashback" and "Video Magic", both released in 1978), each of them being an eclectic mix of rock, electronica and jazz; very different from The Police musical style.

Also, four compilations were released from this collaboration: "Video Flashback" (1979), "Video Magic" (1981), "Eberhard Schoener with Sting, Andy Summers & Stewart Copeland of The Police" (1981) and "Eberhard Schoener / Sting / Andy Summers" (1986).
