Before Marvel and FOX produced X-Men: The Animated Series in the 90s, Marvel made another attempt to make an X-Men cartoon series in 1989 with Pryde of the X-Men. In 1989, Marvel collaborated with the Japanese animation studio Toei the same studio that created Dragon Ball to create a pilot episode for an X-Men cartoon series. The story focused on Kitty Pryde, a girl who discovers her mutant powers of phasing through objects and is invited to join Professor Xavier's school for mutants.

This pilot episode is unique with a couple of changes like australian-accented Wolverine and the character designs are also different from the eventual 90s animated series.

The pilot, despite its dynamic animation and positive reception, did not lead to a full series. The pilot was supposed to launch a 65-episode syndicated series but it never got picked up. The series later served as the foundation for the X-Men arcade game. However, it did lay the foundation for the popular X-Men: The Animated Series in the early 1990s. The episode can be watched on YouTube for any x men fan that would like to see what could’ve been.
