Episode 46: The Final Layer of Silage – Closing the Silo for Winter

In this episode, we reach a major milestone on the farm — the very last layer of silage is added, and the silo is officially closed! After weeks of mowing, hauling, compacting, and layering grass, the clamp is finally full and sealed, marking the end of an intense period of silage making and preparation for the colder months ahead.

The day begins with the final loads of fresh grass arriving at the silage clamp. We show how each layer is carefully spread and packed down to ensure optimal fermentation. This last layer is just as important as the first — it has to be tight, clean, and well-prepared before the cover goes on. Air pockets must be eliminated to prevent spoilage, and everything must be sealed properly to lock in the quality of the feed.

Once the last compaction is complete, the real work begins: closing the silo. You'll see the team roll out the plastic cover with precision and teamwork, followed by placing protective nets and weights to keep the cover secure through wind, rain, and snow. It’s a satisfying and symbolic moment — the final step in a long, physical, and rewarding process.

This episode captures the importance of proper silage storage for winter survival. Without well-preserved feed, livestock can’t thrive during the off-season. That’s why every step, from mowing to sealing, is done with care and experience.

We also reflect on the effort it took to get to this point. From early mornings in the fog to late evenings on the clamp, this isn’t just farm work — it’s a mission. And now, with the silo closed and the feed safe, there's a sense of relief and accomplishment that every farmer knows well.

Join us for this final chapter in the silage story, and get a behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to prepare a farm for winter. From the last wheelbarrow to the final cover, it’s all here in Episode 46.
