32The First Crusade was a military campaign by western European forces to recapture the city of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim control. It was launched by Pope Urban II in 1095, after he received an appeal from the Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos, who was facing the threat of the Seljuk Turks in Asia Minor.
