The game that CHANGED Netherlands' recent history
The UEFA Nations League is finally back, and oh boy have we missed it! Am I right or am I right? No?
Well, in collaboration with the return of the UEFA Nations League group phase we are going down a path in the coming days where we explore an alternate football universe where the first two editions of the Nations League had different winners.
In 2019, England were cruelly robbed of a first final (if you can call it such) since 1966 when Jesse Lingard’s goal was marginally adjudged to have been offside. The Netherlands, who profited from the VAR decision went onto win the trophy and unfortunately fell to a Goncalo Guedes goal on 60 minutes. Would either of their fortunes have changed with a win in the inaugural Nations League?
Then, in the 2021 final, controversy was aplenty because of VAR once more: Kylian Mbappe was adjudged to be onside when, for all the world, he looked to be off. Mbappe netted the winning goal against Spain to return France to the winners podium.
