Why Lionel Messi should have stayed at Barcelona
August 14, 2020: we all know where we were when we saw the most humiliating evisceration in the history of the Champions League.
Bayern Munich ran in not seven goals across two legs against Barcelona as they had done in the 2013 semi-final, but eight goals across one fixture in a damning 8-2 quarter final hammering.
Less than two weeks later, the infamous ‘burofax’ was sent by Lionel Messi to Barcelona, stating his intention to leave the club he had dragged to his enormously high level for a decade and a half.
In a depressed economy thanks to the pandemic, Messi could not simply leave Barcelona until the end of his contract and he decided to see out the remaining 11 months.
There were several u-turns, several forks in the road and a last ditch attempt by both parties to salvage Messi’s one-club status at the Camp Nou.
This weekend we will be playing out the two scenarios that didn’t occur: what if Lionel Messi was able to leave Barcelona in 2020, and what if he was able to stay at the club beyond his 2021 transfer to PSG.
