It turned out to be the most important goal in England’s World Cup campaign in 2010. England squeezed through a group deemed to be ‘easy’, after draws against the United States and Algeria as well as a 1-0 win. Nations had gone through a World Cup group worse off and still won the tournament. However, Landon Donovan’s last-minute winner for America against Algeria in the third group match changed England’s course from a potential path of Ghana, Uruguay and the Netherlands to the likes of Germany, Argentina and Spain.
