19In this video, The Great Giana Sisters, released in 1988 for the Atari ST by Rainbow Arts.
After falling into a dark deep sleep, Giana finds herself in a strange different world with many different hostile creatures that lurk in this dreamworld. To return home and wake up alive, she must possess the big magical diamond, placed at the end of the world, after more than 30 different levels. But Giana is not totally alone, for her little sister Maria can dream, too.
This already awesome female version of Super Mario Bros, has become more famous after Nintendo sued Rainbow Arts. Right from the first minutes of play you can see that the programmers have made a copy/paste of the original. Not only in the gameplay but also in level design and bonus places. The german publisher was forced to retire from commerce the game and let it die, but it was too late. Piracy resurrected the sisters and spread the game worldwide, giving a clone of Super Mario Bros to anyone owning an ST (or an Amiga, C64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC).
The thing is that The Great Giana Sisters is a very well programmed game for the era mimicking the "Bros" brilliantly, with superb graphics, awesome musics and a gameplay simple but addictive. The only thing that ruins the game's experience is the awful flip-screen scrolling but, luckly for us the ST has Guardian Angels and one of these good souls has made a version that fixes this "issue" and other minor improvements. I'll make a video of this version too.
