The History Channel: Great Battles of Rome was released by Slitherine Software in 2007 for the PS2 and PC. I gave this a favourable review but discovered some things later, see notes below:

This is a rare gem I thought I'd discovered while looking for Roman games on the playstation consoles, but having now beaten the Roman campaign, I can report less than favourable results. The campaign ends just as Augustus takes over the empire, around 27BC. That means although there are at least 50 missions, they go by too quickly, and all of the later battles are missing. At the end of the campaign it gives no high score table, or mission results, but instead goes back to the title screen and saves over your progress to make sure you never see your hard-trained legions ever again. I felt very sad at this loss, and having to start the game from scratch with near identical missions but with the Celts felt like the game was only half finished. I would rather have had more Roman battles than play as the Celts.

I was going to say it was fun to personally get to know each of my squads, and train them all up in different ways. The difficulty curve is just right without being too frustrating, and the missions on the medium setting didnt lead to endless retries. Usually I came back to a level I was stuck on the next day and just breezed through it.

Having said all of that, I do think the experience of playing through this was good while it lasted, and even though the Celtic mission seem pointless, there is yet more to the game which I havent seen; maybe with more cut scenes? I'll give this a 6, as it has good addictability and hookability, its just a shame the facts in the story are loose, and the campaign ends just as you feel you are ready to go deeper.
