The Hitman's Bodyguard - Movie Review
2"The Hitman’s Bodyguard" (2017) directed by Patrick Hughes is an extremely funny and entertaining R rated action film. The only thing holding me back from giving it a perfect or near perfect score is the obsession with love as a primary plot point.
Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) is a "triple A" bodyguard. He lost his status as a true professional and one of the best when one of his clients was assassinated, which he wrongly places the blame for on his ex-girlfriend Amelia Roussel (Elodie Yung). A hitman with over 250 kills named Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) accepts a deal to provide evidence and a testimony against a cruel dictator named Vladislav Dukhovich (Gary Oldman), in exchange for pardoning his wife Sonia (Salma Hayek) and freeing her from prison. Michael is tasked with escorting Darius safely to the courthouse but the journey proves difficult and they have history with one another.
The Hitman's Bodyguard is extremely good if your expectations are appropriately set. This is a non stop action adventure that focuses on witty banter and jokes. The action is actually better than expected with constant high quality explosions and clear shootouts where blood actually visually leaves people's bodies due to the R rating. While everyone is great, Samuel L. Jackson really carries the film and leaves an impression on you; practically every line coming from him being memorable funny gold.
The obsession with love bothered me because Michael & Amelia have zero chemistry together and I was already enjoying the other love plot with Darius and his eccentric wife. While the film is just under 2 hours, it actually feels longer than that and particularly stretched out since it is just a simple escort mission at the end of the day. Gary Oldman's accent was bad in my opinion and his character is not very developed other than being a generic evil bad guy. I think both "Deadpool" (2016) & "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014) are better than this one, and this film borrows some things from both of those.
The Hitman's Bodyguard was highly entertaining and I do recommend it. It does not have a lot of depths but it has a lot of funny jokes and above average action, as well as a cast to really like and have fun with.
