The Incredible Machine Game Sample - 3DO
This is the 3DO edition of the highly-lauded game, "The Incredible Machine", which is one in a fairly large series of games originally designed (and coded) by Kevin Ryan, produced by Jeff Tunnell, and published by Dynamix (and Sierra Entertainment) in 1992. The series is built around rational puzzles which are solved by utilizing various functions of set pieces and contraptions to complete a specified task. What made the series revolutionary for its time was the sheer number of complex puzzles, the ability to devise your own "Incredible Machine" puzzles, the large quantity of pieces you could interact with complete with their own physics and/or causes and effects, and lasting appeal. The game has seen a number of sequels, ports, mods, "inspired titles", and spin-offs over the years; whether its "Return of the Incredible Machine", "Crazy Machines", or even the Japanese "Arthur to Astaroth no Nazo-Makai-Mura: Incredible Toons" by Capcom, the series has recieved relatively positive acclaim internationally as well as several awards.
The 3DO game features 208 puzzles in which you can solve that is spread between the main game and dozens of tutorial levels to get you acquainted with the various pieces/tools you can use. You also get basic hints which are voiced to you before the start of a level and can utilize pieces in a variety of ways. There is no time limit and little stress as you can always stop the game and pick up where you left off later, and the fun comes from figuring out how the contraptions must be set up to work, which will allow you to solve the level. While you can figure out some of the pieces on your own, I strongly advise having or finding a manual/FAQ for the majority to fully comprehend their uses, as they aren't all 100% realistic applications. This is a video of the game in action. Enjoy.
