KoF Neowave was released in arcades in 2004, for Sammy's Atomiswave hardware. The Playstation 2 version was released in 2006 in Europe. Neowave is another dream match title, so there's no story and this time there isn't even win quotes. It does have a very large roster of characters, featuring nearly everyone from KoF 2K2 along with some extra returning characters, such as Saisyu and Jhun.

The game is 3 vs 3, but now there are three different gameplay styles to choose from, similar to how you could choose between the advanced and extra modes seen in KoFs '97 and '98. There's also the heat gauge, which when activated will increase your power at the cost of draining your life.

Young Geese, who was last seen in Art of Fighting 2, is the boss of Neowave, and has all the usual SNK boss syndrome features you'd expect, such as his moves doing ridiculous damage. But for some reason he will constantly get hit by Terry's power wave.

Neowave was released for the PS2 and Xbox. The console versions add more characters, such as Seth and Omega Rugal. For whatever reason, the Xbox version does not have May Lee or Angel, whilst the PS2 version does. The Xbox version has online play, but this no longer works. Apparently the music restarts between rounds in the Xbox version.

The PS2 version was released in Japan and Europe, whilst the Xbox version was released in Japan and America. The Xbox version was meant to have a European release, but it ended up being cancelled.
