The KO #97 - MSHvSF's secret PS1 EX OPTION menu and VS CPU mode!
I was hoping against hope that one of the PS1 "Vs. series" fighting games had a Vs CPU mode, because I do so love them; I could see from my old videos of the options menus that X-Men: Children of the Atom and X-Men vs. Street Fighter did not have such a mode (in Capcom fighting games of this era, if there was one, there would be a "VERSUS" mode in the main menu, and then an option in the Options screen to switch Player 2 from "Human" to "COM"--plus you'd need a second controller plugged in to enable the main menu option and select the CPU's character : P), but I didn't have such a video of Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, so hope was still alive...except that what I could find on YouTube and the internet strongly suggested the options menu didn't have the Player 2 CPU option.
GameFAQs to the rescue! Turns out https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps/197866-marvel-super-heroes-vs-street-fighter/cheats there's a code you can enter to access a hidden "EX OPTION" menu in MSHvSF: you highlight "OPTION" on the main menu, and *very* quickly, like within the space of a second, input all these commands on your controller: R1, Circle, Left, Triangle, Triangle.
If you did it correctly, and fast enough, you'll find yourself in the secret EX OPTION menu, which you can see at 0:12 in the video--and right there at the top are the HUMAN/COM toggles for VS MODE! : D
The EX OPTION settings do *not* save to the memory card, even if you go into the regular OPTION menu and save manually afterwards, so you'll have to re-enter the code for the EX OPTION menu and toggle its settings each time you start the game up, if you want to use them.
But, once you do that, and plug in a second controller, you're off to the races! : D
MSHvSF does not have a random character select function, so I made a script to generate random teams (note that in these scripts of mine I remove selections I don't like from the list of possibilities; in this one I removed Blackheart and Omega Red after I made this video--silly late '80s/early '90s Marvel characters : PP--and that boring tree stage) and colors for myself: http://smbhax.com/cgi-bin/teams/mvs.pl
Fun times! Of course this PS1 version of the game is pretty cut down, with cut animation frames, load times, and especially no tagging in your partner character--except in the mirror-match "CROSS OVER" mode--buuuut I *think* it's the only version with VS CPU mode, so, boo yah.
(Oh yeah and I added the secret palette swap character Mech Zangief to my character select script (highlight Blackheart, hold Select, and press Medium Punch). He's a tank! You'll see me fighting him at 8:17, for instance. He can't block, but he's got tons of armor. Might turn out to be a bit too easy to beat once you get the hang of it, I'm not quite there yet. ; )
(Oh and there is a regular game option to switch from the graphical character select menu to a boring, but faster loading, text-based one--but it's so dreary next to the lovely graphical character select screen that I just can't do it!)
(The earlier game in the series, X-Men vs Street Fighter, also has a hidden option menu, accessed via a similar but different code, but that one does not have a VS MODE "COM" toggle in it, alas.)
