SNK가 발매한 대전 액션 게임. 1997년 12월 전편격인 1편이 나왔고, 1998년 11월에 후편격이자 완결편인 2편이 달에 피는 꽃, 흩날리는 꽃(月に咲く華、散りゆく花)이라는 부제목을 달고 가동되었다.

게임 배경은 19세기 중엽인 에도 시대 말기, 개항으로 외세 문물이 유입되면서 존왕양이파와 신센구미가 대립하는 등 근세와 근대 사이에서 뒤숭숭한 분위기의 일본을 그리고 있다. 기본 노선상으로는 사무라이 스피리츠 시리즈의 검투 활극에서 파생된 게임이라 하겠지만, 이미지상으로 당시 인기를 누리던 바람의 검심의 영향력이 강하게 엿보이며 여기다 사신과 지옥문 설정을 줄거리 중심축으로 내세우면서 나름대로의 개성을 구축했다.

전/후편 모두 도산 이전의 SNK 작품 중 비주얼 디테일, 음악, 스토리 등등 전체적으로 완성도가 상당히 높았던 작품. 특히 도트 그래픽은 1999년에 발매하는 가로우 마크 오브 더 울브스 만큼이나 네오지오로 출시한 작품들중에서는 굉장히 부드럽고 디테일이 높았다. 그리고 타 시리즈보다 볼륨이 적었던 만큼 SNK의 몇 안되는 완결작이다

게임 시스템

강베기 한방으로 전세가 판가름날 만큼 무기 공격의 무게감을 의식시켰던 사무라이 스피리츠 시리즈와 달리, 본작은 처음부터 연속기 개념을 중시해 KOF 시리즈에 준할 정도로 속도감 있는 대전을 추구한 것이 특징이다. 또한 그간의 어떤 자사 작품들보다 강제연결(강제캔슬) 요소가 연속기 및 캐릭터 성능에 지대한 영향을 끼치기 때문에, 이 점에서 캡콤의 뱀파이어 시리즈 등을 참고했다는 인상도 준다. 덕분에 겉보기로는 사무라이 스피리츠처럼 보이지만 커멘드 한번한번에 즉각 반응하는 사무스피와 달리 베기후에 콤보를 넣을시 KOF와 동일하게 선입력이 요구된다.

본작의 고유 시스템으로는 튕기기(弾き)와 검질 선택이 있다. 기본 조작은 A버튼 - 약베기, ←+A 버튼 - 리치가 짧은 약베기 /B 버튼 - 강베기, →+B 버튼 - 리치가 긴 강베기/C버튼 - 킥(차기), →+C - 날리기 공격, ↘ + C - 하단 차기/D버튼 - 튕기기. 던지기는 1편에선 근접해서 →(←)+B, 2편에선 근접해서 CD(실패 모션 있음).

검질

명칭은 크게 '力'과 '技'로 나뉘며, 2편에서는 숨겨진 검질 '極' 도 고를 수 있다. 1편은 검질에 관계없이 캐릭터 색상을 3가지 중 임의로 고를 수 있었지만, 2편은 검질마다 캐릭터 색상이 2개씩 나뉘어져 있다. 검질 선택 시 A 버튼 혹은 D 버튼으로 색상을 고를 수 있다.


The Last Blade

The Last Blade is a fighting game developed and released by SNK for the Neo Geo system in 1997. It was also ported to several home systems. A sequel, The Last Blade 2, was released in 1998.

The game takes place during the Bakumatsu era in Japan, and incorporates various elements of Japanese mythology (with a heavy emphasis on the symbology of the Four Symbols). As such, the background music generally incorporates synthesized instruments simulating a sound appropriate to the 19th century setting, in a Western classical, pseudo-Romantic style (unusual for a fighting game).

Gameplay

The Last Blade series is seen as a spiritual successor to SNK's popular Samurai Shodown series, due to it being a similar 2D weapons-based fighting game. The gameplay is characterised by two selectable fighting styles, and a unique combo system along with a "deflect" system which involves pressing the D button at an opponents attack. Upon deflecting, the opponent is left open to attack.

The two styles consist of two modes: Speed mode and Power mode. Speed mode allows players to chain several normal attacks into a special or desperation/super move, as well as execute a Speed Combo. Power mode on the other hand, grants the player increased damage potential exponentially and giving access to Super Desperation Moves which inflict an exorbitant amount of damage (the prerequisites to performing them however, requires the player's life bar to flash and have a full power bar). Power mode also allows the player to perform Super Cancels; canceling a special move into a desperation/super move (but not a desperation move, with the sole exception of Awakened Kaede in the first game).

Characters

All of the characters in the Last Blade series are of Japanese origin, excluding Lee Rekka, who is from China, and Yuki, who is from Russia. Some characters, such as Akatsuki Musashi and Lee Rekka, are based on historical or legendary figures. A number of characters from the Last Blade series also appeared in SNK Playmore's Neo Geo Battle Coliseum.

Ports and re-releases

The Last Blade was subsequently bundled with the sequel The Last Blade 2 for a PlayStation 2 compilation released only in Japan titled Bakumatsu Roman Gekka no Kenshi 1･2 on January 12, 2006 both games are arcade perfect emulations of the original games. The PlayStation version was re-released for PlayStation 3 via PlayStation Network in Asia on May 31, 2007 and later for Vita.

It was re-released for Wii via the Virtual Console by D4 Enterprise in Japan on March 13, 2012 in North America on June 7, 2012, and in PAL regions on August 2, 2012.

A port for Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux and asm.js developed by DotEmu was released by SNK Playmore as part of the Humble NEOGEO 25th Anniversary Bundle on December 8, 2015. It was released on Steam on August 31, 2016, and on GOG.com on May 30, 2017.

Hamster Corporation re-released the game as part of their ACA Neo Geo series for Xbox One via Xbox Games Store on May 18, 2017; for PlayStation 4 via PlayStation Store in Japan on May 18, 2017, in PAL regions on May 25, 2017 and in North America on June 15, 2017; for Nintendo Switch via Nintendo eShop on December 14, 2017; and for Windows 10 via Microsoft Store on February 28, 2018.
