Several months later, Joel and Ellie find themselves outside Jackson, Wyoming, where Tommy resides with a community of self-sufficient survivors. A falling out between Joel and Tommy occurred due to their differing beliefs about the Fireflies; Tommy supported their cause, but Joel did not. However, when Tommy spots Joel in Jackson, he warmly welcomes him and invites both Joel and Ellie to join the community.
Joel reveals to Tommy that Ellie is immune and suggests that Tommy should take her to the Fireflies to develop a vaccine. While Tommy offers to provide gear for their journey, he refuses to take Ellie away from Joel's care. When Ellie discovers that Joel attempted to hand her over to Tommy, she becomes deeply hurt by the thought of being abandoned by someone she considers a father figure. They engage in a heated argument, during which Ellie brings up Joel's late daughter, Sarah. Joel, in anger, claims that Ellie is not his daughter, and they contemplate parting ways.
However, Joel has a change of heart and decides to accompany Ellie on horseback to Colorado, where they believe some Fireflies are stationed. The journey ahead holds uncertainty, but their bond remains strong as they face the challenges and dangers together.
