The following day, Ellie is tracked down and abducted by David's men, finding herself imprisoned in a cell. It becomes clear that David leads a group of cannibals. Surprisingly, David doesn't intend to kill Ellie; instead, he wants her to join his group. However, Ellie firmly refuses and manages to escape her cell. Meanwhile, Joel recovers enough to start searching for Ellie. He resorts to torture to extract Ellie's location from some of David's men.
After her escape, Ellie faces David in a burning building, where she ultimately kills him with a machete. This traumatic act leaves her shaken. Later, Joel finds Ellie and guides her out of the burning structure.
In Salt Lake City, Joel and Ellie continue their search for the Fireflies. Along the way, they share heartfelt moments, apologizing for past conflicts. Ellie presents Joel with a precious photo of him and his daughter, Sarah, before the outbreak. Joel gratefully accepts it, revealing he never forgot about her.
Finally, they reunite with the remaining Fireflies at a hospital. There, Joel learns that Ellie is being prepared for surgery to create a vaccine that could save humanity. The catch, however, is that the procedure will lead to Ellie's death.
