In the desolate landscape of Colorado, Joel and Ellie stumble upon an abandoned Firefly station. However, they learn that the Fireflies have relocated to Salt Lake City. Tragedy strikes when they are attacked by bandits, leaving Joel severely wounded. During the winter, Ellie bravely takes on the role of provider, hunting deer and caring for Joel as he fights for his life.
While hunting, Ellie encounters a man named David who offers her penicillin in exchange for deer meat. Unbeknownst to her, David's men were the ones who attacked them. Despite this revelation, David still gives Ellie the medicine for Joel.
The situation takes a dark turn when David's men capture Ellie and imprison her. Ellie discovers that David is the leader of a group of cannibals. He tries to convince her to join them, but she courageously resists and escapes her cell.
Meanwhile, Joel has recovered enough to search for Ellie. Determined to find her, he uses any means necessary to locate her whereabouts. Eventually, he arrives at the scene where Ellie is fighting David inside a burning building. Ellie is forced to take drastic action, and with a heavy heart, she kills David with a machete.
Traumatized by the violence, Ellie is found by Joel, who comes to her rescue. He leads her out of the burning building, and together, they face the emotional aftermath of their harrowing ordeal.
