The Last V8 (1985) is a futuristic, post-apocalyptic top-down racing game developed and programmed by David Darling, with graphics by Jim (James) Wilson and a memorable soundtrack by legendary composer Rob Hubbard, released under the Mastertronic MAD label

You control a radiation-shielded V8 vehicle, tasked with navigating a barren, nuclear-scarred landscape toward safety before fuel or shield depletes. The game is presented with a split — top-down action display on the top half and a real-time dashboard with fuel, radiation shield, and distance indicators on the bottom

Opening with a digitized command, “V8, return to base immediately,” the gameplay is notorious for its steep learning curve—controls are sensitive and require precision steering rather than directional acceleration

Visually, The Last V8 delivers striking graphics for its era, and its soundtrack by Rob Hubbard elevates the experience—despite a known glitch in the SID music that causes it to fall out of sync (a minor seven-byte coding bug, later fixed in the HVSC collection)
