Let me first point out I noticed this behavior during a playthrough where I was skipping large chunks of the game, so that may or may not have something to do with this. Though I honestly don't know how something battle-related like this could be affected through story breaks, I'm mentioning it because my other files seem normal.

Anyway, I'm not entirely sure what's going on here, but I noticed this peculiar bug recently when I tried to use the 3rd or 4th character's S-Break. Normally, ordering your character to do that forces you to go through with the S-Craft - it's not something you can cancel and then choose a different action. Yet, for some reason, the game showed me the battle menu instead. So, this meant I could basically keep on attacking, preventing the enemy from doing much of anything.

However, if I tried this on my 1st or 2nd party member, it forced them to go through with the S-Craft as normal. So, it didn't seem to matter who was in the 3rd or 4th slot, but they could abuse the bug, whereas the 1st and 2nd characters couldn't (curiously, this changed in chapter 4 to only the 3rd character, no longer the 4th - no clue why).

This effectively means the Zeiss (and probably Grancel) region is no longer next to impossible with a level 3 Estelle and Joshua, provided you have a stronger 3rd party member. Getting past some encounters requires some creative thinking, but it can be done.
