The Legend of Zelda. Penultimate in the timeline, but first in the series and in the heart of many youths from the eighties. This was the first game to come to American shores with a battery pack...and the cartridge was gold! Back when I was a kid, this game was VIP royalty. I never owned a copy until I started collecting, but I was envious of my neighbor's gold copy. It came with a map and everything.

I believe I was eight when I played it in 1990. Back then there was no Internet to tell you where to go next or what to find. All you had at your disposal were the kids on the bus, your friends, Nintendo Power...and the Nintendo Hotline.

I spent days pouring over the world map, trying to find new secrets to tell my friends the next day at school. The game was my first real experience with a nonlinear world exploration. This was the goal of Shigeru Miyamoto who said he wanted to capture the feeling of exploring the woods around his house as a child.

Once my friends and I finally beat the game, we were shocked and a little dismayed that an even harder adventure awaited us. Should have known that was coming from the man who made Mario. It wasn't until college I determined myself to play through Game B. Damn that was hard.

Today I just decided to play on a whim and five hours later I am writing this review. My approach was methodical and I knew everything I had to do and GameFAQs helped by providing dungeon maps for me. It was still a fun time, but twenty-three years after my first experience with the game, the magic has dwindled. I'm old and jaded now, having played thousands of games. Regardless, I do still have those nostalgic memories of my youth.
