Back in late 80's and early 90's Nintendo had an odd habit of making or releasing sequels that no one really expected. Mario Brothers, Mario World, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Castlevania all had sequels that were almost nothing like their predecessor expect in name and protagonist only. Zelda II is one of those titles.
It's not appropriate to call it the red headed stepchild of the series, because it was a smashing success. It was more the adopted daughter that was popular at school and was asked out by all the boys to the prom, even the handsome beau that her sister had an eye on....making her sister jealous, starting a long road of loathing, depression and eating her problems away. Well, look at you now Zelda series, fat off your step-sister's success...Nintendo pimps out their daughters.
Anyways, the overhead experience was replaced by side scrolling action with a way too short blade and weird jumping physics. The over world exploring is still there, but is broken up with nonsequitur like villages whose inhabitants speak in broken English and serve little purpose. Leveling up is added in to make you feel important, or to needlessly grind, not sure which. Finally, the game added in a collection of spells, only three really made a difference and the others were waste to pad out the game.
I may sound overly critical but I was just negatively pointing out the major changes from the first. It's still a great game and a ton of fun to play, but it is also my least favorite of the series I have played. The music is on the level with some of the greatest from the series and graphics are pretty good for NES standards.
Perhaps I'm a little bitter since this is only the second time I played it. When I first tried it I was ten and my patience for RPG's was short...and I was dumb too...I mean come on, I was ten. I beat it for the first time in College before creating these videos and said to myself, "great experience, but now that it's complete, I'm done with the game." I should have left the title back in Nostalgia land where it belonged, but I was trudging up old games I beat to add to my channel and now I'm bitter.
