If a game needs very minimal tweaks before releasing a remake, then it speaks for just how good the original is. Link's Awakening is one of those games. As nice as the additions were in DX, they aren't required to make this a great game. Same goes for the additions found in the Switch version of Link's Awakening, which 32 years later remains my favourite Zelda outing. I was particularly invested in playing this due to the nostalgia value attached, and it was a joy to play because they didn't fuck with it at all. This remake has been built from the ground up, and instead of open world and fully 3D environments we get the original art style, fleshed out in a 2.5D top down style - managing to look fresh yet familiar at the same time.

The game tells the story of a shipwrecked Link, washing up on the island of Koholint and rescued by island villagers Marin and Tarin. Upon discovery of his sword, he is tasked with waking up the mythical wind fish - whose slumber has attracted monsters to terrify the inhabitants of the island. You must journey through 8 dungeons to secure the instruments within which will help you accomplish the task. As in all Zelda games, as you progress you are able to secure special items which will help you navigate the island and defeat the nightmare bosses that dwell in each dungeon.

There are flaws, as the new dungeon creator feature is fun at first - but will eventually become tiresome, as there simply isn't anything new to be found in these rooms and they're recycled from the main 8 that are visited (or 9 if you include the colour dungeon, which is present in this outing). There are also clear performance issues at times, with slow up occuring particularly where there is a music or area change - though it's not major enough to make this any less enjoyable. The score's rework is also very nice and Nintendo have done a great job. This is how you present a remake!
