The Media Is Controlling You
No this is NOT a conspiracy theory. This is a discussion about how business and media use your own psychology and biology to sell you something.
Why do Big Macs sell so well? Simple, thousands of years ago, our ancestors had limited access to food. So when they found sugar, salt or fat, substances we need to sustain our existence, they would consume them as abundantly as the situation would allow.
Fast forward to today and our brains have not evolved much more than our ancestors of thousands of years ago. Sure, we have access to more information and are generally smarter, but the WAY our brains work has not changed fundamentally.
We also have abundant access to sugar, salt and fat if we live in a first world country.
So in short, our brains are wired to work against us. This is called an evolutionary mismatch. They tell us that eating a Supersized Big Mac meal from McDonald's is a great idea because we don't know when we might see our next feast.
Why is the news so negative?
Also simple. Thousands of years ago, our ancestors were attuned to what we'd call "negative" information because it helped them survive. Knowing about a Sabre-Tooth Tiger on the path to our favorite hunting spot would be great information to have.
Fast forward to today with our ancestor-like brains, and we no longer need to worry about Saber-Tooth Tigers or really even a crazy armed man trying to kill us. However, we are still attuned to pay attention to it because our brains are wired to believe this will keep us alive.
Why does sex sell so well?
Again simple. Our most basic function as humans is to continue our species through sex. When we see a pretty man or a pretty woman, our brains tell us, "hey, he or she might be good for mating because of what their looks tell us about their genes.
So fast forward again and we can see why we are so fixated on nudity and the use of sex. It's the most basic activity that keeps us alive besides eating and sleeping.
So companies know they can get your attention if they get a half-naked person to sell you Pepsi.
The way we break free is by training our minds. Whenever you see a Big Mac, train your brain by telling yourself (out loud preferrably) that "This is poison. If I eat that, I will get fat and unhealthy."
Tell yourself, "This negative news is not helping me move my life forward. It just want's my attention long enough to sell me ads during the commercials."
If you can train yourself to think differently, you can beat the controls and influence of the media and businesses that don't have your best interest at heart.
