The Monday Review ep 11: The Outbound Ghost, Monochrome RPG and Rainbow Billy
3Today I managed to get through not 1, not 2 but 3 game demo's for review today. Started with Undertale and Paper Mario Inspired RPG The Outbound Ghost. Very clearly another PAPER RPG maker game, however a lot sets it apart from the flood of games. The character models are great, the story is a mystery within a mystery (who are you AND who was the strange figure at your crash), and a fun unique take on the Undertale combat system. I don't care for the 3D realistic background, but aside from that the game is fun. In its current state def a 8/10 and will be on my wishlist for sure.
Monochrome RPG: A Classical black and right Toonworld is in shock as their mayor goes missing. You play a toon in need of a troupe. So, your job is to go around and recruit people/enemies to your troupe! Each character has a unique set of skills they bring into battle. Main character can tell jokes to calm the enemy (helps in recruiting), or strums a guitar and heals a little. At the current moment, I only managed to recruit the Buzzer unit. In its current state the game is 5/10. The visuals are fantastic as is the music, both capturing the classic cartoon vibe the game aims for. However, no menus, no apparent exp system, and no combat tutorial (i didn't understand when i was suppose to time the punchline for the jokes), it's simply just not playable in it's early state. I will be checking this game out though down the line when it's had more time to be polished.
Rainbow Billy and The Curse of the Leviathan: I had no clue what to expect when I entered this game, and I must say I'm very much not disappointed. Right of the bat, the artwork is very Toonish, giving a heavy Cup Heads vibe. Navigating the map is fun, character moves at a good speed, jumps are fun, camera angles are fantastic and rolling is an option if you wanna move even faster. Now, the icing on the cake is not only the charismatic characters or the colorful world, but THE COMBAT!!!! As you encounter Black and White denizens in need of some color, you are able to help them with said colorfication. You must listen and reply to their feelings in combat, as you do you will unlock more and more of their heart. From their, you use the friends you have recruited to fill in the target's colors! Once maxed out and restored, you got yourself a new team mate. This is the kind of warm hearted, fun adventure I have been searching for. so far, even in it's demo state, solid 9/10 from me.
