Ok so, Pokemon Unite was revealed in June last year in a pokemon presents, and when the game was revealed people were mad. The fact that there was going to be a free to play, League of Legends styled Pokemon game that would be available on mobile devices and the Nintendo Switch just didn’t sit right with people. But here we are, one year later and Pokemon Unite is out on the Nintendo Switch and no one is really talking about it, so in this video I want to talk about my thoughts on the game.

Alright so, for those of you that don’t know what Pokemon Unite is let me give you a really simple breakdown. There are two teams of five players, with the aim of the game being to destroy the enemies bases. To destroy the enemies bases you need to get Aeos energy which you get by killing pokemon on enemy team or by killing wild pokemon. If you get killed then you lose some of the aeos energy that you had and you respawn at your base, then once the 10 minutes is up the winner is decided.

The game is a bit more complicated than that but, like I said earlier, that was a pretty simple run down of the game. It’s basically League of Legends but with pokemon. At the time I’m recording this video I have 3 hours in the game and my thoughts on the game are mixed.

Pokemon Unite is a game that falls under the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena or MOBA genre of video games.I’ve tried playing other MOBAs before and they just aren’t my type of game so just keep that in mind as I’m talking about Pokemon Unite

The combat is very tedious, you essentially just spam A until your more powerful abilities charge and then once those abilities are charged you just do that same thing over and over again for the entire 10 minutes of the match. When you die it can be really annoying as not only do you lose some of the Aeos energy that you gained, but respawning takes longer and longer as the game progresses, so if you die towards the end of the match, you’re gonna have to wait for around 30 seconds to respawn which is just dumb, like who’s idea was this.

Visually Pokemon Unite is alright. Considering that it’s is going to be available on both the Switch and mobile, I guess the developers couldn’t make a super flashy game but for a free to play pokemon game it looks fine, I mean pokemon sword and shield were 80 bucks and those games looked like shit. There are some parts of the game where you can tell the developers got a bit lazy, for example when you go to launch yourself out of your spawn, when you’re actually in the air your pokemon just stands there doing nothing which does looks pretty funny but come on, look at Snorlax just standing there, you can’t tell me they couldn’t of added a simple animation.

No matter how good or bad a pokemon game is, there are usually at least three or four songs that are slappers, but not in Pokemon Unite. The same song plays throughout the entire 10 minute match and it’s really repetitive and does not come close to matching the atmosphere of a battle arena. Then the actual sounds that pokemon make is alright, they sound like what pokemon sound like. It only gets bad when there’s a big fight and everyone is spamming attacks and the audio just becomes a mess but it makes the fights more

Seeing as Pokemon Unite is a free to play game, it had the dreaded micro-transactions. But the micro-transactions actually aren’t in your face unlike other free to play games, which is a good thing. When I finished the tutorial for the game, I was expecting for Researcher Erbie to tell me all about the battle pass and how good it is, but no I actually had to find the battle pass and skin shop by myself which was nice.

Talking about the skins, they look really damn good. Of the few skins or ‘styles’ that are currently in Pokemon Unite my favourites have to be this snorlax skin and this cinderace skin, they just look awesome. I don't think there’s currently one bad skin in the game/
The price for the skins vary from being 350 Aeos Gems which is 13 Australian dollars to being 1,200 Aeos Gems which is 31 Australian dollars. So the skins are a bit pricey but at the end of the day, it’s your choice if you wanna buy them.

Playing Pokemon Unite by myself without being on a call with anyone and not being able to communicate with my team was not a fun time. But when I played with Linkachu and NintenCisco and we were on call and laughing and Linkachu was streaming, it was a pretty good time, even though we lost nearly all of the games we played.
