6The show’s creator, Josh Schwartz, went on to develop Gossip Girl for CW which is hilarious because while writing the script for my little vid I was like “Gossip Girl is basically East Coast the OC”.
Anyway, the OC went from over 9 million average viewers in season 1 to around 5 million in season 3 and the show was canceled in season 4. 700 000 people signed a petition to save the show but this was ignored by the studio…likely in part because Schwartz and his team seem to have blown through their best ideas in the first two seasons and were moving on to better things.
Still the show burned so bright that it is credited with helping launching the indie/emo rock scene that lasted into the 2010s and with sparking the insane interest in the OC area launching about a half dozen reality including the “Real housewives of Orange County” which has lasted 17 seasons and counting (along with 27!!!! Spinoff shows).
The OC is also credited with turning Peter Gallagher into a sex symbol and DILF and it also launched Olivia Wilde’s career when she played the edgy Bi-Sexual who dates both characters played by Adam Brody and Mischa Barton in Season 2.
