11Basically what happened is that Capcom greenlit and funded a Western by developer Angel Studios but the two teams clashed over what a “Western” was with Japan based Capcom looking for something like a rootin tootin cowboy adventure and US based Angel Studios trying to make something decidedly more grim. This caused delays that eventually saw the companies part ways and the game being shelved.
While all that was going down Rockstar stepped in and acquired Angel Studious because they liked the company’s game engine tech. Rockstar decided to finish off Red Dead Revolver as a way of getting their teams acquainted with that engine and because even though the Western genre had fallen out of favor with audiences this meant that, kind of paradoxically, it provided the opportunity of standing out as the only Western game on the market.
As a result in 2003 Rockstar acquired the rights to Red Dead Revolver from CapCom, completed it in 9 months and within months quietly began the 5 year process of creating its infinitely more popular and influential successor…
