The Old Man of the Mountain collapses
The granite rock structure collapsed due to cycles of freezing and thawing creating large cracks which weakened it. On a breezy, misty morning it came crashing down.
After years of debate about if it should be reconstructed or not, a memorial was built, which sounds like a fishing pier into the lake that allows you to see where the Old Man used to be
Already a local legend it gained nation and then international recognition thanks to New Hampshire Politician and 19th Century Secretary of State Daniel Webster who said of it:
“Men hang out their signs indicative of their respective trades; shoemakers hang out a gigantic shoe; jewelers a monster watch; and the dentist hangs out a gold tooth; but up in the Mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there He makes men.”
