Hard Science Fiction is SF which does not involve any violations of known physical laws and the technology of which is based on reasonable extrapolations of existing and known technology. Heinlein was probably the best known writer who wrote mostly hard SF

The ship depicted here, the Milkweed class solar sail spacecraft, is envisioned as a small freighter with genetically engineered algae life support systems. Solar sails are a well known future propulsion system, unfortunately no mission exists yet to test them but they are based on hard science (and observations of the Echo 1 satellite which was a big reflective balloon in space).
