Baldur's Gate 3 is not an open world game, but it feels more open than many of the best examples of the genre, like the Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk 2077. That's because openness isn't always just about having space to explore; it's just as much about filling spaces with choices and alternatives and meaningful interactive detail. And sometimes spaces can feel more open *because* they are smaller, because smaller spaces are easier to grasp in your mind. Cyberpunk's Night City might be vast, but the spaces of Baldur's Gate 3 occupy a larger space in my memory because I interacted with it more.
