In this lecture and discussion session from my Fall 2013 Ethics class at Marist College, we discuss the major themes of book 9 of Plato's Republic. We begin by looking at the kind of person that Plato calls the "tyrannical" man. Then we examine the distinctive pleasures and desires for each of the three parts of the soul (rational, spirited, appetitive), and look at the arguments Plato provides concerning which pleasures are actually the best and most enjoyable.
