One of my favorite opening maps. Congo is perfectly representative of what to expect from Plutonia. It immediately hits with Death Mask, a perfectly dreary and thematic track that gets me in the mood to face this special brand of hell. It has 2 archviles, and chaingunners at every opportunity. For a player coming in for the first time after playing Doom 2, they will have a tough realization that you are not safe here and there is no hand-holding. Every trap is designed to frighten and kill the unaware. Even on repeat playthroughs with the expectations of where everything is, the challenge is still there. Health is not abundant, and the chaingunners are cruel and will always be chipping at your health. The quartet of revenants fought in a tight space is the hardest encounter and the most likely to make a new player quit, either that or the immortal chaingunner and his supporting archvile.

I have played Plutonia more than Evilution throughout my life, but I don't remember the maps as perfectly. To me, Evilution is like watching a movie I've seen 1000 times, I can recite every line, there are no surprises. Sure it can be nostalgic, but its worn to death. Plutonia is a different story, I always look forward to playing through it. Where Evilution is long and cinematic, Plutonia is short and punchy, my preferred flavor. I have played it my whole life and I still find it challenging and still get that feeling of mystery. Now paired with my favorite community midi pack, it is refreshing and takes me home to my dads old house, makes me feel like myself. I am getting way too deep into this but also I don't feel close to describing how I feel about Plutonia. Expect more gushing later as these maps unlock memories for me.
