My favorite third person shooter ever and a very underrated game. The Punisher is a classic game that doesn't get mentioned much anymore, pretty much playing perfectly as you could ask for at the time and one of the first games that I can think of that nailed the third person controls on a gamepad. This game is drenched in atmosphere and lore, you can truly tell the developers were in love with the original concept material and worked in every way to show it justice in video game form.

The Punisher runs great too, targeting 30 with dynamic vsync and stays locked at almost all times, all while being very stable and free of any bugs.

This game is gorgeous, one of the best looking on the original Xbox. The Punishers character model is probably in the top 10 for the most polygons used on an individual, along with the excellent gun models rivaling FPS games. All of the menus are tailored in a comic book style, noir aspects and show homage to the source it derives from. The subtitles are written in a typewriter font that you'd see in comics. The voice acting is superb as well, with the Punisher being one of my favorite spoken characters ever, delivering every line with a deep, sarcastic, but murderous tone. Everyone else plays their roles excellent as well, even the enemies who offer humorous and very self-embraced cheesy lines.

Gameplay is a bit different than your standard third person shooter, playing almost like a cover shooter, where using human shields is basically mandatory in later levels as ballistics damage can be absurd on higher difficulties. The interrogation system that this game is probably most know for is fantastic. It's easy to learn, controls very well for each action and feels absolutely brutal if you decide to take it farther with specialized unique scenes for each. I believe there are over 100 in total, along with Special Kills which are similar. There is also an extensive point and upgrade system, where it's based on going long periods without taking damage and interrogating enemies in between.

One of the reasons the first few levels I play so defensively is to procure 400,000 points early on to get the health regen upgrade from killing enemies, basically a requirement on the difficulty I chose. Oddly finishing enemies off in interrogations cancels your current score, which is why I avoided them early on but putting a bullet through the skull of the individual you just interrogated is okay.

The Punisher also features an awesome, sick and violent gore system, being able to dismember still alive enemies among brutal, horrific death scenes caused by your own control and hands that cause this game to get censored before release and even banned in some countries. I skip a lot of these in the video to get high scores for upgrades, I'd suggest looking these up on YouTube if it interests you. They are seriously awesome and brutal.

I'd rate The Punisher an easy 9/10 for me, being one of my favorite games of all time and something I've finished more times than I can remember on PS2 and PC. This was my first time playing on Xbox, which I believe is the best release version. The only fault I could find is the underwhelming boss fights which I did not mention, but only play a very tiny role in the game. Otherwise, it's near perfect in my eyes and deserves to be revisited by everyone or tried for the first time if you've never.
