Amazing sequel that plays totally different that the original game, but doesn't go backwards by any means. Combat is fast and fluent; the game runs great and is a lengthy campaign.

The game runs at a pretty much locked 30, with proper vysnc and very rare drops below. It features a great full screen motion blur that makes the fast actions seem much smoother than it really is. I experienced no bugs during my time and the game remained very stable from beginning to end.

F.E.A.R. is a massive, huge step up in the graphics over the original game, owing that to beautiful image clarity and sharp antialiasing. Textures are of very high resolution with incredible bump mapping, along with deep dark soft shadows and volumetrics scattered everywhere. Each level is unique and very artistically designed. I spent more than an hour looking around the school level, inspecting billboards and posters just to see the fine details in stuff most people would never notice. Character models and weapons are also very well done.

Gameplay is where 2 switches things up a lot, no longer being a frantic rushing in and quickly making decisions type of style, but now playing more like your standard Call of Duty shooter. Most of the action will be spent behind cover, peaking out at times to take potshots at your enemies. Slomo has been reduced to a faster paced but lasting longer adrenaline rush. The player character can now move much faster in the mode, but is still prevented from rushing into rooms as the enemy count has been drastically increased over the original F.E.A.R. I have heard many people take complaints against this, but I personally found it enjoyable and took note of how they weren't just trying to imitate the original style, but take 2 in a different direction which I feel it does very well.

Some negatives I have are the removal of leaning, something I used constantly in the originals and it's 2 expansions. Grenades no longer go off on contact with enemies which is something I really don't understand the reasoning behind. Weapons also felt very weak and underwhelming, especially the shotguns which is basically a sin as the one from the first game is on legendary status but here in 2, enemies can take 5-6 point blank shots before going down. None of the other guns felt like they packed much of a punch either - except the sniper rifle, which takes its legendary status here and is super satisfying to use. There are also a couple of robot-mech sections that were decently fun to play and control but took forever upwards of a minute or more of just standing still in a spot to regenerate its health and happened multiple times while I was controlling them, becoming irritating.

I would give F.E.A.R. 2 a great 8/10, as it's a fantastic shooter and stands up in its own place to carry the series forward or tried too anyways. I was okay with the different style of gameplay and felt they made the right decisions moving forward into a more modern playing game for consoles as the original to this day, still holds up extremely well and is perfectly playable. I feel like Monolith knew they made a masterpiece originally and didn't want to get involved in trying to build upon what was already great but instead to try something different.

Great job Monolith.
