The Queen of Duellist Gaiden [ザ クィーン オブ デュエリスト 外伝] Sample -- PC-98
The Queen of Duellist (or Duelist as it's also known) Gaiden is one of several titles (the second in the series) of "all-female" fighting games that was released back around 1993 and was released on several platforms such as FM Towns and MSX(2). While not as well known as the title often touted for bolstering all-female fighting games, Variable Geo, it was one of the best competitors on the PC-98 for the early-mid 90s, using well-designed characters with fluid animations, nice usage of colors, and a good soundtrack. It is milder on the adult content than V.G. and just like the first V.G. game, its "story" was paper-thin. While the first QoD game wasn't very good, Agumix tried hard to make up for this in subsequent releases.
The game has five normal playable characters with two boss-esque characters (Strange Gold & Great Takagami) who are unplayable I believe. Each character has at least three special moves and can perform basic combinations-- later versions of the game gave characters ultimate special attacks as well. The game is slightly different as all the main characters in every game, including the newcomers, were female, but bosses like Strange Gold are sexless (but leans towards female) and Takagami I think is a male. The game features music and stages for each character, a versus mode, and various options to change things like the game speed, audio type, and even the ability to turn off the CGs.
The game also rewards players for fighting on higher difficulties; if you play on Easy, you won't be rewarded with After-Battle CGs and you won't be able to see a character's ending or staff roll. A CG gallery and Sound/BGM Test is added upon completing the game, though you won't see their endings listed. Characters were voiced by various seiyuu.
One of the biggest trivia quirks for this game and the main reason I played it is that one of the main character designers for the game is the famous Kokomai or "Kokomahi", who did artwork for the Playstation "Crime Crackers", titles among many others. Even more interestingly, one of the characters is a half-human, half-beast named "Elza Kanagusuku" (or Kanagusk) -- Kokomai would not forget this character; a similar female character would emerge several years later in Crime Crackers 2 named Shiza Kanagusuku who is also skilled in hand-to-hand combat, is of a beast tribe, and even shares Elza's last name. It's something I need to add to my articles in the future.
Now that you know that, this video shows a few fights using Elza, a small bio of each of the characters, Elza's Ending and Elza's staff roll. Enjoy. ザ・クイーン・オブ・デュエリスト
