The split that cost Brian Clough and Nottingham Forest
Brian Clough and Peter Taylor first worked together when Clough, aged just 32, took on the Hartlepools United job in the 1960s. Taylor was working as Burton Albion manager at the time and together they achieved greatness. They planted the seeds for Hartlepools promotion from the fourth tier before dredging the likes of Derby County and Nottingham Forest from the second tier and turning them into English champions. In the latter’s case, the pair won them two European Cups. Clough retired in 1993, with Forest’s relegation, after 18 years in charge, just three years after Peter Taylor died. The pair ended on bad terms, trading barbs in the public eye, having not worked together since 1983. Without Taylor, Clough could only muster a couple of League Cup titles.
