In Final Fantasy IV for the SNES, there's a very stupid and easy way to get softlocked by forcing yourself back into the Super Cannon room in the Tower of Bab-il.

After defeating Balnab and Dr. Lugae in the Tower of Bab-il, you'll head down a few floors and enter the Super Cannon room. At first it's locked, but you'll receive the Tower Key from Dr. Lugae when you beat him. So you use the Tower Key and enter the Super Cannon room and these Imps will attack you and it's a very easy battle. Once you beat them, they'll trigger some sort of self-destruct mechanism.

Normally, at this time Yang (the karate guy) will make a valiant sacrifice and push you out of the Super Cannon room as it explodes. The rest of your party stumbles out of the room and down the stairs, and you can see the explosions as Yang is vanquished by the destruction. After this, you won't be able to re-enter the room, and Yang is gone, and it's generally sad.

But! If you hold the Up arrow on the D-Pad while the dialogue ends, you'll be able to re-enter the Super Cannon room, which is normally not possible. But don't do this because you will be trapped in this room with no way to escape except for resetting your game!

Side note, Yang absolutely did not have to sacrifice himself in this scene because like... we could have just walked away. Slowly, even. Everyone would've been fine??
