The Tale of horrendous Bonfire placement in Dark Souls 3: Casual edition
There are some things that Dark Souls 3 does right, bonfire placement is not among those things... because it is terrible. Not only it intentionally trivializes your experience to make sure that your progress is well controlled, it kills the atmosphere of mystery and despair, the one I love so much.
Despite Dark Souls 1 having some problems with that as well, it was done billion times better. For the most part, the shortcut bonfires were well hidden, so you had to explore the level to find them, as opposed to FROMSOFT dropping them right in your face Dark Souls 3 style.
You can reduce the number of Dark Souls 3 bonfires by a third and it would make it only better, more challenging and rewarding. As it is right now, screw planning and resource management - dying isn't even much of a penalty since you have a bonfire right around the corner.
I could forgive FROMSOFT for being bonfire-happy if the level design was top-notch, but it rarely is - outside of the say, Undead Settlement (which I think is the best area in the game and I actually don't even mind the bonfire placement there, because it makes sense) - most of the other areas just encourage you to run past everything, thanks to amazing bonfire placement.
You may think that I am exaggerating the problem: statistically - maybe, but it does, for sure, ruin the atmosphere. Nothing spoils the adventure more than knowing that there is likely a checkpoint within next 5 minutes of gameplay.
