The Anschluss was the occupation of Austria by Germany, annexing the country into Nazi Germany in 1938. This came mere months prior to the 1938 World Cup, a tournament which qualified Austria would no longer take part in and a tournament which Germany were keen to win, to promote their propaganda under the Nazi banner. Numerous Austrians opted to play for Germany at that World Cup, players that wouldn’t were Karl Sesta and Matthias Sindelar who both gleefully celebrated goals for Austria against Germany in the Anschlusspiel. Sindelar was found dead in his apartment less than a year later.
