The time Inter ALMOST signed this absolute GOAT!
What if Eusebio signed for Inter? #eusebio #inter
If the torch hadn’t been passed from Real Madrid to Benfica with the Portuguese club’s winning of the 1961 European Cup final then the following year’s 5-3 win over Real Madrid certainly confirmed that. Eusebio proved the difference with Benfica’s fourth and fifth that day.
He’d been in the team less than a year but had already wowed global audiences with his performances against Santos in the Intercontinental Cup as Benfica began to dominate world football.
Bela Guttman wasn’t long for Benfica as their manager, however, and proclaimed that Benfica would never win another European Cup. They still haven’t, but not for the want of trying as Eusebio lost finals with his boyhood club in 1963, 1965 and 1968.
There was a way Eusebio could have escaped the ‘curse’, and that was a move to Italy. In the first of two parts, we ask: What if Eusebio signed for Inter?
