I don't claim that realistic is better, indeed, I am a huge fan of many ludicrously unrealistic tales. But I take a certain pleasure in attempting to explore the likely outcomes of the little pieces. Sometimes a thing has to turn out one way or another for the story I want to tell, but whenever there are multiple equally good narrative paths I attempt to go with the probable one.
One of the reasons I have come to love writing Emerald is because she plays by the very conventions I love but am not writing in this tale. It makes for some easy amusement.
Sandstorm sits in the dangerous position of Red Shirt. She's a friend of several of the main characters, and they would be very much shaken if she were to die, but I have absolutely no narrative purpose for her. She has a single mention in the storyboards, and that was her introduction! I didn't leave her out of the plot because I planned on killing her either. After I'd drafted the plot I didn't see anywhere for her to fit, so when it looked like the TPs would be taking a hit, she was on top of the sacrifice list.
I hope that she'll survive the series, but her fate is a mystery to me. I'm hoping that she'll grow beyond her role and find a unique way to contribute to the plot, like Emerald does. But it's also likely that she might either retire or fall in the line of duty, and I still don't know.
Good luck Sandstorm.
