The #1 thing about this game and the reason i enjoy it so much is because it combines procedural level generation, if youre not aware of what this is, a procedurally generated level means that if you die the level will not be the same, every time you play a level, weather it be you getting off and starting the game up the next day, or if you die, it will be completely different. In this game there is absolutely no check points and that is because of its procedurally generated levels. Branching paths with different secrets and surprises because of this will keep you entertained throughout your time playing the game. That procedural generation in particular is very Rogue Legacy, meaning you can’t just hope to go back to the bit you were before and make incremental progress – once you’re dead, that level is gone.
So in Dead Cells Your going to run through the dripping sewers and across the ramparts of a castle, killing enemies and collecting their souls which are used to purchase upgrades later on in the game. The game takes inspiration from other games like Dark Souls, Rogue Legacy, but with some 2d Metroidvania level designs similar to the older Castlevania games. Dead Cells puts its own spin on Metroid by introducing what the developers are calling Roguevania.
Roguevania blends permadeath with complex and unique systems of progression that result in the exhilaration of discovering new and hidden areas, which is helped from your unlockable abilities that you earn through out your time playing.
To start off You’ll make your way around taking out creatures that are just as mysterious as you are, I say this because You start as a green pile of ooze that gets scattered onto the floor and then You crawl over to a dead body with no head and take it over. There’s no pattern to the enemies on how many show up in what area, but the mechanics of them can be learned helping you throughout your playthrough, So you’re basically just left to see what’s around and figure out the best play to what appears while you are playing. Once you die, you lose everything and start off in a brand new area that looks somewhat like it did before, but it actually isnt the same.
There are three kinds of enemies you run into in the game, ranging from standard to elite. for example Your standard do what they do (like a scorpion who can stab you), the hard bump it up a notch (a scorpion who can move quickly) and then the elite (like a scorpion that can teleport & is much harder to kill). The game is primarily based on patterns when it comes to enemy attacks and once you nail those down you’ll be able to get through the levels easier. Like I mentioned b4 where they appear is randomized but the patterns on there attacks can be learned.
There are a variety of weapons to earn in each level as well as health upgrades to make the game a bit easier, there is a lot of puzzling platformer based gameplay that you will need to do in the game you cant just hack and slash through everything, so basically you will need to think out a plot and then make your move.
I know this sounds stupid coming from someone reviewing a game but no matter how elite you are, you’re going to die. A lot. There are times where the enemies just become to much and you will not get away from it. But believe it or not that is one of the main points of the game because it will be a new level each time and it’s also something to learn from as you make your way back through a different area.
Dead Cells doesn’t offer a lot in story because it’s still sitting in beta but once it releases out of early access there will be a story line implemented and it will be interesting to see how the developers can do that with a game that generates a new level everytime you die. Motion Twin the creators plan to keep Dead Cells in Early Access between 8-12 months and aims to have roughly double the content it has right now. There is currently 11 levels Each one with varied monsters, level designs and secrets to discover. Approximately 50 weapons and skills, 2 bosses, and 2 special powers, which unlock new areas. The game is very unique in what it delivers and I would recommend to anyone that enjoys metroidvania type games, reguardless weather you die a ton ATLEAST FOR ME you wont get frustrated because of the amount of things the game offers.
