The Yoyo Glitch in Smash Bros Melee (GameCube) - A Wild Glitch Appears! #melee
1,217In Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube, you can exploit Ness' Yo-yo attacks to create static, invisible hitboxes that have some weird and surprising properties. In this video, I provide a short demonstration of the Smash Bros Melee Yo-yo glitch.
There's a TON you can do with this glitch, but the basic premise involves hitting an opponent or object with the initial hitboxes of Ness' partially charged Up Smash.
Ness often wields a Yo-yo as a weapon in the Earthbound games, so both his Up Smash and Down Smash use a Yo-yo. When charging his Up Smash, Ness will extend his Yo-yo in front of him, as if he's "walking the dog."
While his Yo-yo is extended in front of him, the Yo-yo has an active hitbox. If this hitbox damages an opponent or object, then the UpSmash is released within 6 to 11 frames, the game will place an invisible hitbox onto the ground.
If an opponent runs into this invisible hitbox, they will take damage and the hitbox disappears. However, if an opponent is between this invisible hitbox and Ness, virtually any non-projectile move that Ness performs will hit the opponent, regardless of how far Ness is away from that opponent.
So for example, if the invisible hitbox from the Yo-yo glitch is active on the far left side of Final Destination, and Ness is standing on the far right side of the stage, Ness will be able to grab an opponent standing between himself and the invisible hitbox - even if the opponent is in the middle of the stage or otherwise out of reach of Ness' tiny little arms.
